It is 15 years since the first edition of "From Guarene Etna", a project launched in 1999 by Rebaudengo designed to investigate the practices of young Italian artists engaged in the interpretation of the language of images.
Since then I have 41 artists that gradually took part in this survey, some of them appear in multiple editions of the project that has had a nearly three-year intervals: the first edition in 1999 in the picturesque area of the former Church of the Carmine in Taormina, the Galleria Civica di Modena in the following year, and finally in Milan at the Galleria del Credito Valtellinese in 2001; a renewed edition of the first in February 2002 at the Italian Pavilion at the complex of Venice Biennale; In 2003 a new selection of artists in Guarene d'Alba, then proposed to Palermo at the Civic Gallery of Modern Art in 2004, a few months later edition of the women titled "Tell Me Why", again in Guarene. In 2006 nine other young authors are presented, in order to reach the tenth edition of the project in the fall of 2009, where they found the 35 artists invited until then.
The ten artists included in "GE/14. Other by the Images, From Guarene to Etna 1999/2014" involved with their work to a total offer highly heterogeneous and varied as to form and use of the language of images, where the photograph reads, however, play a key role, acting as a precise reference and indispensable even when does not seem to be the focus of research of the artist.
In this approach, it would seem, is the great and sudden deviation of these artists from the Italian tradition than in previous generations has always looked to the landscape and to the various facets of this from the time of Louis Ghirri, Gabriele Basilico, Mimmo Jodice, Guido Guidi, insisting then with the younger Vincenzo Castella, Olivo Barbieri or Walter Niedermayr, just to mention a few of the many interpreters of Italian photography in recent decades, favoring a direct interpretation of the world that is clearly present in the works of many of the protagonists of the previous editions of From Guarene to Etna: just think of the work of Vittore Fossati, Andrea Abati, Luca Campigotto, Andreoni and Fortugno, Antonio Biasucci or Francesco Jodice.
It would seem, we said, because in reality, if the method is immediately noticeable deviation from a modus dividends that is inherent in the DNA of Italian photography, especially in the content that is the latest generation gap is felt, showing how artistic practice, the see the world through images to get to the other images in itself, is a necessary process and one last landing of a research that crosses many areas that the photographer can synthesize and return to work, for its particular sensitivity. Exemplary in this sense, the work of mixed media and installative Elizabeth Senesi, Paola Pasquaretta, Eva Frapiccini, as they are from another perspective, those of Tancred Mangano, Claudio Gobbi or Ticozzi Giulia, between visual writing, history and literature, and in other form those composed of moving images by Francesca Rivetti, Bruno Pulici and Valentina Sommariva. Elisa Franceschi, finally, closer to the important past of Italian photography, uses the landscape as a tableau where to put the world of teenagers without doubt one of the most enigmatic and insidious.
The exhibition will have a soundtrack. The Foundation organized the second edition of soundtrART - voiced the exhibition, competition aimed at musicians, DJs , composers, professionals and aspiring amateurs, professionals who also composed the soundtrack for the show based on the concept and images of the works. The winners are Antonello Aloise and Riccardo Di Giann with the song A due passi.
