Recently exhibited at prestigious events such as Afterimage at Mart in Trento, and L'Arte guarda avanti as finalist of the Premio Terna6 competition, the project Paper Religions #Jerusalem is now displayed as a whole for the first time ever, from its origins in 2005 until today, by Paolo Tonin,.
This work came to life to investigate the issues related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and in its evolution it became expression of freedom for every person, regarding religious matters and their bond with the claim of individual freedom.
Paper Religion #The Wall sees the light in 2008 as a parallel event to Manifesta7. It is clearly inspired by the West Bank in Israel. For this task Marco Dalbosco assembled a group of twelve people, who worked together for a week in order to build a wall. The wall was built using paper bricks, created using the origami technique, losing its meaning of barrier and border. Using paper as material, crafted with such partcular technique, the artist describes the frailty of human beings, but shows our ability to build our future and history, everyone with their own hands.
Taking Jerusalem as a symbol of respect and cohabitation of different religious beliefs, in 2011 Paper Religion #Jerusalem is born: bricks divide, split and create a border, but at the same time they are basic elements for the construction of every religious building. Bricks are placed on the ground, they create a carpet, above which the three monotheistic churches are “hung”: a Catholic Church, a Synagogue and a Mosque. They are also made out of paper, they are as fragile as the bricks.
For the first time, during the exhibition, the comprehensive expression of this long and meaningful journey of research and awareness will be presented to the public.
