The Marciana National Library, in collaboration with the Cultural Artistic Association "New Woodcut", 8 August to September 7, 2014 in his Monumental Halls organizes the exhibition "The woodcut magazine", conceived and curated by Gianfranco Schialvino and Gianni Verna. Admission and ticketing from the Museo Correr (Napoleonic Wing by Piazza San Marco).
The exhibition shows the numbers of "Smens": a magazine printed on cotton paper and press with the arms, with lead characters and illustrations engraved on tablets of wood. This in itself is not sufficient to declare it special, but when you consider that you have written poets, scholars, philosophers and writers such as Norman Mailer and Mario Luzi, and then Gianfranco Ravasi, Nico Orengo, Federico Zeri, Elemire Turf, Roberto Sienese, Mario Rigoni Stern; which have been published woodcuts of the most talented engravers in the world as Barry Moser and Leonard Baskin, Eugene Bortnikov and Jean Marcel Bertrand, and artists such as medlar, Safe, Luzzati; and yet that has revived Depero Viani and Casorati, then you get to define the importance. Also strategic, because the disappearing Xylon International, a worldwide association that brought together through the national Xylon any engraver woodcut, smens is found to be the sole aggregator for these artists who compete every time to review images with texts, all original, who generously with incredulous curiosity for reckless adventure which they are invited to participate, the authors write.
Be today at the threshold of the third millennium, in front of a magazine like "smens", which proposes the manufacture of the book as an ancient product, it may perhaps be judging this experience out of time, "superbly useless" as it was christened with witty analysis the magazine on his debut in 1997, now that the traditional book is accompanied by the transfer of knowledge to other media, particularly digital ones. Some items, however, recognize the value that brings topical unexpected: the magazine "smens" almost like an ancient library that contains stories, aspirations, needs, sweats, curiosity of men, bears witness to a past that allows us to understand the present, proposing trades refined, now lost, such as that of the printer and engraver - in the margin are exposed to large sheets silografici Gianfranco Schialvino and Gianni Verna - and serves as a reminder of the knowledge and memory of the factory of the book, which has marked the history of 'man and it was one of the most important elements for its development and emancipation.
