A paleochristian basilica erected by Pietro d’Illiria between 422 and 432 on top of the domus of a roman matron, identified with the saint from Umbria. It was enlarged in the following centuries and, in the Ninth Century, incorporated into the imperial bastions. In 1222, Honorius III gave it to San Domenico, and in the years immediately following, the bell tower was built, then modified in the 1600s, and the cloister was added as well. The layout, made up of three aisles divided by 24 columns recovered from the nearby Temple of Giunone Regina, was not modified by the restoration work of Domenico Fontana (1587) and Borromini (1647), but the overlapping of the columns was eliminated in the 1900s by Antonio Muñoz (1914-19; 1936-37).
