Chapel of Sixtus V

Cappella Sisto V Dedicata al Santissimo Sacramento, fu progettata da Domenico Fontana, integrando l’Oratorio del Presepe di Arnolfo di Cambio. Al suo interno sono collocati i monumenti funebri dei due pontefici, mentre le pareti sono ornate da un ciclo di affreschi. I marmi policromi e le colonne provengono dall’antico Settizonio, un ninfeo situato ai piedi del colle Palatino.

The chapel was built destroying various pre-existing chapels and altars, while incorporating, under the altar, the Oratory of the Presepe with the relics of the manger of Bethlehem. In the chapel are the funeral monuments of Sixtus V and Pius V, while the paintings are by Nebbia, Guerra, Lilio and others. The polychromatic marble and the columns belonged to the Septizodium, a multi-level nymphaeum on the Palantine.
