On the evening of 21st July 1908 more than 30,000 Venetians and over 3,000 guests from every part of the world arrived at the Venice Lido for the grand opening of Hotel Excelsior.
The hotel, overlooking the beach, is one of the most charming examples of Venetian architecture from the early 1900s; commissioned by entrepreneur Niccolò Spada and designed by famous architect Giovanni Sardi, the building astonishes for its unmistakable Moorish style and for its special ornaments, which draw on those of Cordova and Granada.
With the expansion of 1914, the hotel started beckoning the international jet set and in 1932 it housed the first International Film Festival, which made it even more popular and well frequented. In 1984 Sala degli Stucchi was chosen by Sergio Leone as a setting of one scene of his movie Once upon a time in America.
