DESCRIZIONE:
The first great amphitheatre of the city, called for by Vespasian and completed by his son Titus (80 A.D.), it is built on the spot of the artificial lake of the Domus Aurea of Nero. Made of Travertine marble, it is 48.5 meters high and made up of three superimposed levels of columns (doric, ionic, corinthian), for a total of 240 arches. There is no historical basis for the legend that christians were martyred here. Today, it is also used as an exhibition space.

THINGS TO KNOW: It stands on the place where was the artificial lake of Nerone's Domus Aurea. Diego Della Valle has allocated 25 million euros for the restoration which will last about three years.
