Florence - Three marble statues by Donatello will be exhibited as an exception in the Baptistery of Florence from May 30th to November 30th, 2014. They are the "bearded Prophet", the "Prophet Jeremiah", and the "Prophet without beard", and were created between 1415 and 1436. Also, they are three of 16 works commissioned to many artists by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore for Giotto's Campanile between 1330 and 1430.

The Prophet without beard will be on display for the first time after its renovation, which allowed it to be cleaned from dirt and weathering effects.
Its figure is 192,5 cm high and is inspired to the classic orator, but is also very realistic and expressive. Its head, which bears distinctive characters, could be a portrait of Filippo Brunelleschi. The work was created for the east side of Giotto's Campanile, the one looking at Brunelleschi's Dome, that did not exist at that time.

The bearded or meditative Prophet is the second of the statues designed by Donatello for the Campanile, and is the most monumental and introspective. FInally, the pose and the expression of the Prophet Jeremiah inspired Michelangelo's David in the early 16th century.

The exhibition of the three prophets was possible due to the temporary closure of the Museum of the Opera del Duomo, that will open again in 2015, with new and larger exhibiting spaces.
