Naples - After Piazza della Scala in Milan and Palazzo Leoni Montanari in Vicenza, the Gallerie d'Italia have officially opened a new space in the city of Naples, in the prestigious Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano.
The building, which is the historical headquarter of the Bank of Naples - later incorporated in the Intesa Sanpaolo Group, is now home to a collection of over 120 works, which together retrace the history of the visual arts in the city, from the beginning of the 17th century to the early 20th century.
Walking through the seven rooms one can admire masterpieces such as the "Martyrdom of St. Ursula" by Caravaggio, painted in 1610, a few months before his death, "Samson and Delilah" by Artemisia Gentileschi and many other works belonging to the cultural context of southern Italy, namely of Naples.
Palazzo Zevallos aims at recovering its traditional function, being the chest of a renowned art collection. In 1692 Carlo Celano described it as "a gallery of fine paintings in Naples. One could really see beautiful paintings, and many of them, by famous masters, both old and modern."
