Palermo - The church of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio, known as "Martorana", is one of the finest architectural jems of Palermo.
Its origins date back to 1143 A.D., when Greek Admiral George of Antioch established and decorated in Byzantine style.

The oriental ornaments were later enriched with further interventions, especially in Baroque style. This gave the church a lavish and varied appearance both inside and outside.

From June 18th, 2014 this incredible heritage will be shown in a new museum, housed in the rooms next to the church and created according to a specific project between 2011 and 2013.
The exhibition will take visitors through the whole complex, revealing its history and the changes introduced in more than eight centuries, until the 20th century.

It will be possible to visit the bell tower and the choir of the former Benedictine Monastery, with frescoes by the Flemish artist Guglielmo Borremans (c.1717) multi-colored ceramics create by Neapolitan artists in the late '700.
