Rieti - The small rural church of Sant'Adamo in Cantalupo was recently restored and reopened to the public. In the beginning, it was a little chapel dedicated to the worship of this beatified charachter and was later extended in the 15th century.

The building, which was donated to the town of Cantalupo around 2000 and then renovated, is a rare example of late Gothic painting in Sabina and was already well-known for its frescoes, especially those above the altar, depicting the Coronation the Virgin and some saints including Adam, protector of animals.

The recovery of these paintings brought to light other wall paintings, which for centuries had been covered with a thick layer of plaster. Its removal revealed images of St. Sebastian , St. Francis and Saint Anthony of Padua, as well as those of the Madonna lactans and of Madonna of the Misericordia. These images, which are fairly common in Sabina, represent ex-voto ??depicted by the local people around the 15th century, and are similar to those of the nearby church of San Paolo in Poggio Mirteto.

The church, which every year on My 1st was a destination for the processions of people and animals, will go back to its original appearance after the end of the works, while the religious practice has already been reintroduced.
