The painting is contemporary to the two greatest masterpieces of the artist, Déjeneur sur l'herbe and Olympia, which drew many criticism for their clean break with traditional painting and consecrated Manet on the French art scene. Out of the numerous portraits by the master, the painting of Turin stands out for the fresh spontaneity of the character, whose figure stands out of the dark background thanks to the three-quarter pose and the touches of colour of the turban and the white shirt.
