Presentation of Mary in the Temple
Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella, or New Church
The painting was placed, in 1603, on the altar of the chapel of the left transept, built in 1589 by Bishop Angelo Cesi. The painting depicts, as for tradition, the young Maria at the top of the stairs of the temple, in the presence of the priest. Around the central scene are angels, bystanders, and in the foreground, a pastor with a sheep and a young maiden with a chest of flowers.
Barocci also painted the Visitazione (1583-86) for the Chiesa Nuova.
