Stefano Cagol. The Body of Energy (of the mind) - Performance

From 15 Giugno 2018 to 20 Settembre 2018

Palermo

Place: Piazza Magione

Address: Piazza Magione

Stefano Cagol in Palermo realizes a transversal project that will cross the city at different levels through performances, official and improvised ones, a talk and an exhibition, bringing to Sicily his project "The Body of Energy (of the mind)".

The artist was invited to Manifesta 12 by the nomadic curatorial platform Arts & Globalization in "Art & Connectography: Remapping the Global World through Art", a collateral event curated by Rikke Jørgensen and Valentina Gioia Levy, composed of meetings and performances with the participation, among others, of Hou Hanru, Chim↑Pom, Jeannette Ehlers, La Vaughn Belle and Stefano Cagol himself. The latter brings to Manifesta "The Body of Energy (of the mind)", an extensive transnational project already presented in several European museums, which in Palermo becomes a performance and simultaneously a large-scale infrared projection on June 16th. Location of "Art & Connectography" and of Stefano Cagol's intervention is Piazza Magione, chosen by Manifesta as headquarters.
Within the "Art & Connectography" program, Stefano Cagol will also be the protagonist of a conversation with Blanca de la Torre.
The project by Stefano Cagol in Palermo is implemented in a further collaboration responding to the invitation to participate with "The Body of Energy" in "Cassata Drone", on view from June 15 to September 20 in via Malta 21. At "Cassata Drone " – curated by Giovanni Rendina and conceived by G. Olmo Stuppia – the invited artists are  Stefano Cagol, Maria D. Rapicavoli and Raqs Media Collective.
According to Stefano Cagol's own working method, these official presentations of "The Body of Energy" in Palermo will be preceded by a series of improvised performances at other times and places in the city.
"The Body of Energy (of the mind)" by Stefano Cagol in Palermo is supported by the VISIT program of the Innogy Foundation, the German institution based in Essen committed to supporting Manifesta 12. The project in Palermo is also supported by the Autonomous Province of Trento.

About TBOE:
Stefano Cagol’s on-going project “The Body of Energy (of the mind)”  – the acronym is TBOE – gives shape to energy, to energy exchanges, to our relation with the environment and with the others using a technical device like a thermal-camera in performances and participative performances in public spaces for opening an unexpected point of view on reality, its resources and the persistence of the consequences of our actions.
The term “energy”, already used by Aristotle in philosophy, begins to take shape in physics in 1619 Kepler’s Harmonice Mundi: energy is a fundamental part of our lives in every moment and in every place, but is much important, vital, present, as at the same time invisible, immaterial, intangible.
With this project the artist makes visible the invisible. Tuning the vision into infrared waves.
The artist draws attention symbolically to temperature as a manifestation of energy, using a special technological device: a video camera sensitive to the infrared, a technological device developed with military purposes as a way of detecting and destroying enemies and taken up by Cagol as a means of evoking life and its traces.
He decided to travel through Europe “scanning the new energy” in places where renewable energy is produced and where cultural energy is diffused like museums and art institutions realizing surveys, reproductions, signals of energy. The visitors and passers-by are involved in participative performances, are asked to act spontaneously: experiencing their bodies in front of the special camera, exchanging energy with the environment, drawing with the temperature of elements, traces that assume visibility through technology. The relationship with what surrounds us is discovered because the fast touch lasts for many minutes evoking the persistence of our actions on nature, the meaning of life, both physical and mental and the fact that we are pure energy. The experiences are shot and shown live in immersive infrared video projections.
TBOE was born as a European trans-national traveling project between 2014-2015 in Norway, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Gibraltar-UK.
TBOE è nato come progetto itinerante europeo transnazionale tra 2014 e 2015 in Norvegia, Germania, Italia, Svizzera, Francia, Belgio, Danimarca, Spagna, Gibilterra-Regno Unito. Its has already been hosted by: Museum Folkwang, Essen (DE); MAXXI Museum, Rome (IT); Museion, Bozen / Bolzano (IT); Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen (CH); ZKM, Karlsruhe (DE); Landmark, Bergen Kunsthall (NO); MA*GA, Gallarate (IT); MADRE Museum, Naples (IT); Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, Venice (IT), Kunst Asyl, Quedlinburg (BE); ONE, Ghent (BE); Dolomiti Contemporanee, Borca di Cadore (IT); Barents Spektakel, Kirkenes (NO); Italian Cultural Institute in Paris (FR); Nau 1, Barcelona (ES); Ørslev Kloster (DK); Listen to the Sirens, Gibraltar (UK); University of Salerno (IT); CLB Collaboratorium, Berlin (DE); Kunstmuseum, Bochum (DE); Cambridge Sustainability Residency (UK); Villa Adria, Adria (IT); Agder Kunstsenter, Kristiansand (NO). There was a collaborative performance in Cambridge in 2016 in the frame of the Cambridge Sustainability Residency (UK) and in 2017 “The Body of Energy” had a significant update with educational developments in Norway and in Italy. The workshop held at the MA*GA in Gallarate in collaboration with colleges in November 2014 was selected as one of the best Italian projects between art, art and science and presented at the Italian Pavilion in the frame of "Vivaio Scuole" at the World Expo 2015 in Milan.

Quotes about TBOE:
“The exchange of energy with the public should be one of the main goals of art institutions. Stefano Cagol found a way to make this purpose real and physical.”
Giovanni Carmine, director of Kunsthalle St. Gallen

“Stefano Cagol’s thermopoetic research resounds in a peculiar way here, so close to the place of birth of Joseph Beuys, who always understood and described art as an exchange of energy and warmth.”
Tobia Bezzola, former director of Folkwang Museum, Essen

“When Stefano Cagol makes the thermal energy of human beings visible, then this event can also be viewed from a sociopolitical perspective because it also figuratively reveals the force within the individuals of a society.”
Andreas Beitin, former director of ZKM Museum of Contemporary Art
