During sculpture network’s international start’18 event, which is being held on January 28, 2018 starting at 11 a.m. (MEZ), artists, specialists and art lovers will come together in studios, galleries, museums and other locations around the world. This year’s theme is „Sculpture and Architecture“ and over 5000 participants are expected.
The International Celebration for Contemporary Sculpture is being held for the 9th time. This special event unites the entire sculpture community simultaneously at a variety of locations. The different formats include exhibits, panel discussions, lectures, workshops, artist talks, installations and tours revolving around the topic „Sculpture and Architecture“, all of which will be held in studios, museums, galleries, sculpture parks, sculpture workshops and foundries. Guests present at this international event include artists, curators, critics, collectors, gallery owners, architects and anyone interested in sculpture. All participants communicate and share their local impressions globally via the digital network.
start’18 allows participants to experience the special features of three-dimensional art, both in terms of the process of creation, as well as the journey into the public eye first hand. In particular, the immense variety of sculpture’s presence in the international art scene is brought to life at 95 locations around the globe and virtually via social media. All the guests can share their impressions with each other via the live photo wall. The content posted, marked with the #start18 , can be seen by all participants around the globe in the virtual world and in real time on the photo walls at the locations. sculpture network’s main goal of making three dimensional art more visible and to improve networking between everyone who enjoys this form of art is accomplished on this day in an impressive, unique and modern manner.
Ralf Kirberg (Chairman of sculpture network): „In 2010 we initiated the January meet-up – originally there were 500 people at 19 locations. Happily, this particular format grew at a breakneck speed – we have jumped from having 70 locations last year to 95 this year. To me personally, as a collector, connoissieur and, meanwhile also someone with in-depth knowledge about contemporary sculpture, this shows that our goal of increasing international networking addresses a need in the art world and is also in touch with our times. The significance of sculpture network is increasing continually because we rely on face-to-face encounters and personal exchanges while, at the same time, increasing exposure to the extensive riches three-dimensional art around the world has to offer.“
This year the 95 hosting venues are located in 21 different countries: Bangladesh, China, Germany, Denmark, Finnland, France, Great Britain, India, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, South Africa, USA, Venezuela and the United Arab Emirates.
Some of the event locations included are: Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art in Munich (GER), CLB Berlin (GER), Exhibit on „Sculpture and Architecture“ in the College of Fine Arts and Design in Sharjah (AE), Workshop in the Foundry „Carolina Bronze Sculpture Park“ in Seagrove, NC (USA), Gallery Martinez Glera in Logrono (ES), West Coast Fossil Park (ZA), Janine von Thüngen’s Sculpture Park in Rome (IT), Stefan Szczesny’s studio in St. Tropez (FR), Kronborg Castle with an exhibit from Malene Bjelke and Helle Rask Crawford (DK), the exhibit „Building“ by Lisa Traxler and Karen Karen in The Bunker, Isle of Wight (GB).
