The National Galleries of Ancient Art present, from 18 March to 30 July 2023, at Palazzo Barberini, the exhibition The sovereign image. Urban VIII and the Barberini curated by Maurizia Cicconi, Flaminia Gennari Santori, Sebastian Schütze.The exhibition was born on the occasion of the four hundredth anniversary of the election of Maffeo Barberini to the papal throne with the name of Urban VIII and intends to celebrate the cultural and political profile of the pope who more than any other had an extraordinary and radical impact on philosophical thought, scientific knowledge and on the arts of the seventeenth century, with the aim of illustrating the ways in which the pontiff favored the instrument of cultural hegemony in function of political and government action.Masterpieces of the Barberini collection, dismembered over the centuries and currently conserved in the main museums of the world, return to their original location. On display more than 80 works from the museum's collection and from over 40 Italian and international museums and private collections; just to name a few: Uffizi Galleries; Brera 's picture gallery; Capodimonte Museum and Real Wood; Galleria Borghese, Vatican Museums, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, The British Museum, The National Gallery, Museo Nacional del Prado, Musée du Louvre; Albertina, and Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna; Minneapolis Institute of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art of NY, Philadelphia Museum of Art and Saint Louis Art Museum.The itinerary is divided into twelve sections, proceeding from the Exhibition Space on the ground floor to the most emblematic spaces of the museum, such as the monumental rooms on the main floor: the Pietro da Cortona Room, the Marble Room, the Throne Room, the Landscape Room and some halls of the permanent collection.
