Built in the sixth century, it gets its name from Saint Theodore and was probably built on a circular pagan temple from which it derives its form.
The layout of the street takes up the ancient Vicus Tuscus which once connected the Roman Forum with the Boarium Forum and the Tiber, making it a fundamental hub for commerce in the city. Today, it is a wonderful spot from which to enjoy a splendid view of the Forum and the western side of the Palantine down to Circus Maximus.
