Hosted by the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Palazzo Nuovo, it is the oldest public museum in the world, thanks to the donation in 1471 by Pope Sixtus IV of works of art once held at the Lateran Palace. In the 1500s, Pope Leo X and Pope Pius V added to the collection, but it was mostly in 1734 with the acquisition of a number of marble statues of the Albani collection that the museum truly grew notably. When Rome became the Capital, the museum took over the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Museo Nuovo (1925) and the Braccio Nuovo (1952) were opened as well. The museums hold collections of classic marble and bronze statues, paintings and a collection of medallions and coins.
