The work, signed and dated, is one of the greatest masterpieces of the roman painter, who ended his career with this work on wood. The beautiful painting, on a rich background of gold, fuses the iconography of the Annunciation with the archangel Gabriel who comes to the Virgin as she gives gifts to young maids, who are presented to her by the spanish Cardinal Torquemada, the infamous dominican inquisitor.
