Lateran Baptistery

Il battistero di forma ottagonale fu fatto edificare dall’imperatore Costantino con il nome di San Giovanni in Fonte. La preziosa vasca battesimale in basalto verde è incorniciata da otto colonne in porfido e da altre otto minori in marmo. Tra le cappelle spicca quella di San Venanzio con i mosaici del VII secolo, coperti parzialmente da un altare barocco.

Octagonal in shape, it was built under Emperor Constantine with the name San Giovanni in Fonte. The splendid interior is modulated by eight columns in porphyry and eight smaller columns in marble, placed around the precious baptismal bath of green basalt. The chapels are of great interest as well, such as that of San Venanzio with its mosaics from 640, partly covered by a baroque altar.
