Virgin and Child with Saints Gregory, Maurus, Papia, Domitilla, Nereus and Achilleus
The roman masterpiece of the great flemish painter, financed by Federico Borromeo, adorning the main altar of the church and made up of three pieces of slate. At the center, around the oval for the icon of the Virgin from the 1300s, are Angels and Cherubs, while the side pieces depict Saints adoring the central image. Rubens also painted the copper covering depicting the Virgin with Baby Jesus that protects the Madonna Vallicelliana, which can be seen when the copper cover is lifted using the automated system.
