It is one of the last XIX-century squares built in Turin (1864) and was financed by the British entrepreneurs of the Financial Society, which invested in the area. In the centre stand the Memorial of the Frejus tunnel by Luigi Belli (1879) and the Guglia Beccaria, the stone marking one of the ends of the straight line required to determine the latitude of the Turin meridian, calculated in 1759 by mathematician priest Giovan Battista Beccaria (the opposite end is in Rivoli).
