Portrait of a Man (Trivulzio Portrait)
This signed and dated painting is one of the most famous works by the artist. It presents a marvellous blend of the analytical depictions typical of the Flemish school and the geometric balance of Italian Renaissance culture. As in other portraits by the artist from Messina, the intense, mocking expression on the face gives a mysterious, fascinating air to the picture. The work is also known as the Trivulzio Portrait after the Lombard family that inherited it from the Florentine Rinuccini family along with the rest of their collection.
