Jacopo Sansovino built the elegant Libreria building starting from 1537 to house the Greek and Latin books and manuscripts which had been bequeathed to Venice by Cardinal Bessarion in 1468. The elegant outer profile was supposed to be the distinguishing mark of the new square while inside seven painters, including Salviati and Veronese, were called to paint the elaborate allegoric cycle of the ceiling supervised by Tiziano, who painted the Sapienza (Wisdom) of the lobby, and by Sansovino. Paolo Veronese, for his Musica (Music), was awarded by the two painters as the best painter of the lot.
