Cammeo Zulian

San Marco

Cammeo Zulian
The cameo (room XII) is one of the masterpieces of ancient glyptography (a technique used to engrave hard stones and gems). It shows Zeus Egioco, holding his aegis, the shield covered with the hide of goat Amalthea which had fed Zeus when he was a child. It probably comes from Ephesus and was bequeathed to Girolamo Zulian who then left his collection to the museum in 1795.
