Madonna Nicopeia

San Marco

The tablet of the Madonna Nicopoeia, also known as the saint of victory, is a byzantine work which came to Venice, probably as booty from the fourth crusade (1204) and is part of the type of icon that byzantine emperors would have placed in front of their armies. Considered miraculous, it has been considered for centuries as the protector of Venice and is placed on the main altar for solemn occasions.
