Saint John the Almsgiver
Titian’s altarpiece for the high altar represents the church’s title: St John, Bishop of Alexandria, who was celebrated for his works of charity. The saint is shown in the act of giving coins to a poor man, and his features conceal a portrait of the Doge Francesco Donà. The church was actually directly subject to the authority of the Doge, who managed and controlled it.
