Venice receives the Gifts of the Sea from Neptune
This painting by Tiepolo, dated 1745, is located in the Four Doors Room. The Room, completely rebuilt after a fire in 1574 on a design by Andrea Palladio, continues the celebration of the city’s history started with the Golden Stairway with works by Tintoretto on the ceiling and by Titian. In the painting, Venice is a finely dressed woman to whom Neptune offers the gift of gold and jewels: its prosperity and grandness are the fruit of the sea. The work was originally hung on the ceiling, while today it stands on an easel, so as to fully appreciate its colours.
