These are two paintings that date from the later life of Venetian landscape painter Francesco Guardi, of whose works very few remain in Venice. The views are taken from the piazzetta of St Mark’s Square, one looking towards Santa Maria della Salute and one towards San Giorgio Maggiore. The latter, in particular, is one of the artist’s finest works, with the light of the sunset which glorifies monuments and figures in an atmospheric vision.
