DESCRIZIONE:
It is the former city port, built in the XV century, when the commercial expansion of the Republic of Venice made a new customhouse necessary. In 1677, on design by Giuseppe Benoni, the square tower located at its extremity was replaced with a lighter one, surmounted by a statue by Bernardo Falcone, portraying kneeled Atlases supporting a gilded bronze sphere, on top of which the statue of Fortune, rotating, points to the direction of the wind. In 2007 François Pinault signed an agreement with the Municipality of Venice and Palazzo Grassi for the creation of a contemporary art centre. The project was entrusted to architect Tadao Ando, who kept the original warehouse structure and remade the typical masegno paving of a city campo. The museum, opened in 2009, houses exhibitions of works from the Pinault collection.
