Florence - Why Michelangelo's David is so famous? Victor A. Coonin, professor of art history at Rhodes College in Memphis, has tried to answer this question with a book, in which the masterpiece is examined not only in its original Renaissance context, but also through the opinions developed by criticism over the centuries.

"From marble to flesh. The biography of Michelangelo's David" is halfway between the specialized texts usually intended for scholars and publications full of images but poor in content, typically offered to the general public.

According to Coonin "Michelangelo's David has a unique story to tell. It's a story rich of cultural meanings and interpretations. In other words, it's the story of a realistic, yet very contemporary, work of art, whose "life" has never ended. Therefore I have structured the chapters in a way that retraces the different ages of a person's life (David), and I defined the text a "biography", trying not to force the analogy too much."

In particular, the author focuses on the events related to the origin of the sculpture and the work of Michelangelo, investigating the reasons for such a famous and historical questions still unresolved.
The last chapters are devoted to criticism and historical role that David took, particularly in the twentieth century, as an icon, or rather as a pawn in the political art-games, with the final outcome of its relocation to the Accademia Gallery.
