The 318th birthday of Giambattista Tiepolo, Italian master of the 18th century, falls on March 5th, 2014.
Google Italy dedicated him today's doodle, sketching a fresco that resembles closely the paintings he designed for prestigious residences all around Europe, though it is not an accurate reproduction of any of them.

The master from Venice began his career in his hometown, creating paintings and frescoes for churches and mansions, where he explored religious themes as much as those related to history and greek mythology. His talent allowed him to work on renowned locations such as the Cathedral of Udine, Palazzo Clerici in Milan, Palazzo Labia and Ca' Rezzonico in Venice, but took him also to Wurzburg, in Bavaria, and to Madrid, where he died in 1770.

Among his masterpieces, the frescoes painted for Villa Valmarana in 1757 stand out. They include heroic scenes from mythology and from Greek and Roman literature, such as the Iliad or the Aeneid, but also from the italian one, quoting episodes from Tasso and Ariosto.
Some of his masterpieces are on display in the exhibition "The Charm of the Fresco" at the MAR Museum in Ravenna until June 15th.
