Milan - The altar piece of Pigello Portinari needed a restoration for a long time. Now the work has begun thanks to the funds collected by the Fondazione Atlante, a non-profit organization involved in social initiatives related to culture and sustainable tourism.
The panel, attributed to Giovanni da Vaprio or a master close to Benedetto Bembo, was painted in the second half of the 15th century and is located in the chapel with the same name in the Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio in Milan, not far from the well-known sarcophagus of the Magi.
It portrays the apparition of St. Peter Martyr to Pigello Portinari, a representative of the Medici Bank sent from Florence. On that occasion the Saint from Verona suggested to Portinari the establishment of that building, which happened between 1462 and 1468. The Chapel, which hosts the remains of both the characters, is one of the most celebrated examples of Renaissance architecture in 15th century Milan.
The altar piece, which was in a serious state of degradation, is surrounded by the fresco cycle by Vincenzo Foppa, that was found under many layers of plaster in 1952 and depicts episodes from the life of the Domenican Martyr and the Virgin Mary.
