Milan - The Villa Reale in Monza, an architectural gem designed by Giuseppe Piermarini upon request of Maria Theresa of Austria, will shine again. The reopening is scheduled for September 2014, when the last technical tests will be concluded.
After more than two years of works, which since March 2012 have involved nearly 100 people, including restorers, the palace will open again its wonderful spaces, spread over an area of 3,500 square meters. Inside there are more than 40 rooms, decorated with over 2,000 square meters of parquet floors and 800 square meters of stone surfaces and equipped with 1,200 meters of plants.
The renovation was on the facade, the main staircase, the ground floor -with the recovery of the walls and wooden components and the consolidation of the structure - and the first floor, with the Ballroom, the White Hall and the Belvedere. Most of the works, however, focused on the structural and decorative parts of the second floor.
Since the end of the year, for the next twenty years, the company Nuova Villa Reale Monza Spa will manage the palace, supported by a scientific committee including experts and professionals in the arts and culture field.
In the fall, the administration aims to organize various international initiatives, which will launch the Villa Reale and anticipate Expo 2015. Among them, besides exhibitions and events, there will also be a permanent display focused on design, set up in collaboration with the Triennale di Milano.
