Archangel Saint Michael

National Museum of Saint Angel Castle

DESCRIZIONE:

Placed, in 1910, in the so-called “Courtyard of the Angel”, it had dominated the city from the summit of the castle until 1747 when it was replaced by the statue by Verschaffelt. It was created by, Montelupo, the sculptor from Tuscany and not by Guglielmo della Porta as was thought for years, at the time of Pope Paul III. It is believed to be inspired by the prior angel commissioned by Nicholas V in the 1400s and destroyed by an explosion in 1492.
