Composition with Propeller

Mario Sironi

Peggy Guggenheim Collection

DESCRIZIONE:
In this still life, characterized by a whirling composition, the shapes of two propellers are visible. Mario Sironi had studied engineering before starting painting and the metal shapes with various fragments of tools hint at a Cubist breakdown of an engine. The presence, in the bottom part of the painting, of a Spanish paper clipping is still unclear under an iconographic profile. The energetic stroke, the celebration of machine, the spiralling movement inherent in the propeller (or propellers) and the dynamic composition link this work of art to a futurist aesthetic theory heavily influenced by synthetic Cubism.
