High Altar
Church of Santa Maria del Monte (of Capuchins)
This is a marvellous multicoloured marble structure by Carlo and Amedeo di Castellamonte (1634-37). Above it there was a wooden statue of the Virgin and Child that was unfortunately stolen in 1980. The large canvas of Our Lady of the Assumption by Orazio Gentileschi (1600-5) that once covered it can now be found in the Municipal Museum of Ancient Art in Palazzo Madama.
