Venice - The renovation works of the statue of St. George are almost completed, and it will shine again soon from the top of the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, next to the Giudecca island in the Venice lagoon.
The wood and copper work, designed by the well-known architect Andrea Palladio around the mid-16th century, was struck by a bolt of lightning in 2002, losing an arm and the flag attached to it.
Now the missing piece will go back to its place, thanks to a team of expert restorers, who carried on part of the renovations from the top of the dome, at almost 35 meters from the ground.
Massimo Rigo, the architect in charge of the works, explained that the peculiar climate conditions to which the statue is exposed did not allow to use organic adhesives. Instead, they required a traditional reinforcement, with hand-molded steel and basalt.
