Moments

The Empty Quarter is the first gallery in the region dedicated exclusively to photography. It hosts photographers of international fame, but it also committed to sustaining and promoting new talent. The collective exhibition Moments was born of this commitment and features the work of 11 future stars. There is no specific theme, the moments that lend the exhibition its name are highly varied and correspond to the individual personalities of the artists, their backgrounds and sensibilities. The methods of photography are quite different as well. Sebastian Ebbinghaus, for instance, relies on a nocturnal vision to share the emotions he felt during a visit to Nepal; Janaina Matarazzo, meanwhile, captures a sort of light similar to the paintings of Constable in narrating the wild nature of Botswana; and then Habby Khalil creates images that explore, in black and white, the deeper regions of a true crime which occurred in Egypt at the start of the 1900s. The English artist and photographer Christopher Osborne is on hand with two series of photos both using the cyanotype technique as an homage to one of photography’s pioneer’s Anna Atkins. The other photographers on display are Al Moutasim Al Maskery, Hamed Musharbak, Khaled Al Hammadi, H.E. Muhammad Al Murr and Yousif Al Harmoodi, Ahmad Alnaji, Irina Kazaridi.
