Piazza Navona
Roma Barocca
The most "shameless" dress of the city, the least hidden and the most glaring. It is impossible to walk through the center of Rome without running into a masterpiece of baroque art: to get a sense of this, it is sufficient to visit Piazza Navona with the splendid Fontana dei Fiumi by Bernini and the church of Sant’Agnese with its beautiful sculptures; just a few steps away is Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza with the imaginative steeple by Borromini or Palazzo Spada with Borromini's deceptive plays on prospective. The work of the two masters can also be found in the architecture of the Quirinale where, right next to each other, it is possible to find the Sant'Andrea of Bernini and the San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane by Borromini. Then, of course, there's Saint Peter's, with the colonnade by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, as well as the interior, where the artist created his celebrated Baldacchino, the Chair of Saint Peter's and papal tombs. However, Bernini is everywhere, designing the statues of Ponte Sant'Angelo and at Sant’Andrea delle Fratte and, then, there's the splendid statue of the Ecstasy of Santa Teresa at Santa Maria della Vittoria and that of Ludovica Albertoni at San Francesco a Ripa.
A special leg of the itinerary is that of the Borghese Gallery, which holds some of the most celebrated sculptures by Bernini along with paintings by Caravaggio and Domenichino. Caravaggio deserves his own itinerary, from the church of San Luigi dei Francesi to Santa Maria del Popolo, from the Capitoline Museums to the Barberini and Corsini Galleries.
If you have a special interest in painting, you must see the "break-through" frescoes on the ceilings of the churches of Sant’Andrea della Valle (Lanfranco), Sant’Ignazio (Andrea Pozzo), Gesù e dei Santi Apostoli (Gaulli), but also Palazzo Barberini, which hosts the magnificent Trionfo della Divina Provvidenza by Pietro da Cortona. The tour comes to an end with the architectural design of this last artist with a visit to see the beautiful facade of Santa Maria della Pace with its adjoining piazza, creating a theatrically stunning urban backdrop.
