It is one of the biggest parks in the city and originated with the family of Paul V, which at the start of the 1600s, was one of the most powerful families in Rome. It was Scipione Borghese who accumulated the land to create a villa of which the “casino-palazzina” (today Galleria Borghese) would be the fulcrum. The complex was completed in 1633. The successive works date back to Marc’Antonio (1766) and Camillo Borghese at the start of the 1800s (i.e., the monumental entrance at Piazzale Flaminio). The State bought the villa for 3 million lira in 1901 and, after two years, gave it to the city that destined it for public use.
