Portrait of Carolina Zucchi (The sick woman)
The painting, as suggested by the confidential and intimate dimension of the work, should be read as an homage to the portrayed woman, who had a love affair with the painter and had been portrayed by him in other circumstances (1825-26). Carolina Zucchi, from a cultured family of the Milan middle class, was part of the club of intellectuals that would gather in the rooms of the father’s home, patronised by famous musicians in addition to Hayez.
