It is the largest square of Turin and is commonly known as piazza di Porta Palazzo because here used to be the north-eastern gate to the city, demolished in 1800. The arrangement of the large octagon was made by Gaetano Lombardi (1819), who levelled the remains of the old fortifications and gave the area a look in tune with the so-called " Juvarra quadrangle" to the south. The square has always had a calling for shopping thanks to the temporary market.
