This piece constitutes Titian’s first great public affirmation. To represent the Assumption of Mary, to whom the church is dedicated, he constructed an extraordinary pictorial machine which eliminates any reference to the usual architectural layout, using only light and colour to depict the glorious ascent of the Virgin towards God the Father.
