The fragment was part of a Crucifixion of which a group of angels represented by a cast is also left. It is an important token of the first mosaic cycle of the basilica. Discovered in 1955 in the South-Western pillar, today it is kept in a cassina, a wooden box housing the original mosaic fragments which were removed during restoration work.
