The work is the cover of the Golden Pall of St Mark’s Basilica, which is exhibited only on major festival days. It was commissioned by the Doge Andrea Dandolo and is divided into two registers: the upper register depicts Christ with the Virgin and saints, and the lower level seven scenes from the life of St Mark, which record his link to Venice.
