Passengers in Transit

The Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos is set to make a significant mark at the 60th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia with its exhibition, Passengers in Transit.

Scheduled as a Collateral Event of the Biennale Arte 2024 “Stranieri Ovunque - Foreigners Everywhere”, this showcase hosted and supported by 193 Gallery, brings together five Afro-descent female artists from Africa, the Caribbean, and the USA: April Bey, Christa David, Euridice Zaituna Kala, Joana Choumali and Thandiwe Muriu. 

They explore the intricacies of foreignness, identity, and belonging in our global society and employ interdisciplinary practices to navigate the convergence between identity, gender, memory, and place. Their works engage with history and fiction, prompting a thoughtful reflection on the representation of black bodies within the contemporary world and speculating on possible futures.

The project urges viewers to contemplate the endless journey of self-discovery within the context of social beings, drawing from philosophical propositions by Levinas, Waldernfels, and Edouard Glissant's right to opacity, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and respecting diversity.

18 aprile, 16:00 - 18:00: Presentazione della mostra a cura dei curatori, con la partecipazione speciale degli artisti Joana Choumali, Thandiwe Muriu, Christa David, Euridice Zaituna Kala, seguita da un cocktail VIP fino alle 21:00. (su invito)
19 aprile, 16:30 - 18:00: Apertura ufficiale e discussione con i curatori Paula Nascimento e Roger Niyigena Karera, insieme alla partecipazione speciale del Direttore Esecutivo di CCA Lagos, Oyindamola Faithfull. La discussione sarà seguita da un cocktail e musica dal vivo fino alle 21:00.
20 e 21 aprile, 10:00-11:30: Books and Breakfast, Colazione e presentazione di libri nella biblioteca
