Forgotten in the storage, it was painted by Michele Desubleo, from the workshop Guido Reni

Bologna - A large canvas depicting the "Madonna of Mount Carmel with Child and angels" has been kept in the storage of the National Gallery of Bologna for a long time, out of the sight of visitors and scholars.

Recently, the almost accidental discovery of an old photograph taken before WWII brought back the work to the attention of some experts, allowing them to identify its author and provenance once and for all.

The painting used to be hung in the former Church of Mount Carmel (Chiesa del Carmine) in Massa Lombarda, near Ravenna, and was removed after the bombing of the church in 1945.
All the information led to its actual author, the 17th century Flemish painter Michele Desubleo, who worked in the workshop if Guido Reni. Some of his paintings are on display in renowned institutions such as the Uffizi Gallery and the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena.

The work, which was restored and exhibited in the Gnudi hall of the Gallery on this occasion, will go back to its owner - the Municipality of Massa Lombarda - in its original location.
