Venice - The International Jury of the 14. International Architecture Exhibition announced this year's winners. After awarding the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to Phyllis Lambert, few days ago, the other prizes were officially assigned.

The Golden Lion for the best national participation went to Korea. The project, "Crow's Eye View: The Korean Peninsula" at the Giardini, amazed the jury "for the extraordinary achievement of presenting a new and rich body of knowledge of architecture and urbanism in a highly charged political situation. Using diverse modes of representation that encourage interaction, it is research-in-action, which expands the spatial and architectural narrative into a geopolitical reality."

The Silver Lion went to "Monolith Controversies", the National Pavilion of Chile, "for revealing a critical chapter of the history of global circulation of modernity. Focusing on one essential element of modern architecture - a prefabricated concrete wall - it critically highlights the role of elements of architecture in different ideological and political contexts."

Finally, three special mentions went to Canada, for its in-depth study of the adaptation of modernity to a unique climatic condition and a local minority culture, to France, which addressed the successes and the traumas embedded in its utopian visions of modernity, and to the controversial Russian Pavilion, for its vision of commercialization of architecture.

The Silver Lion for the best research project of the section Monditalia went to "Sales Oddity. Milano 2 and the Politics of Direct-to-home TV Urbanism" by Andrés Jaque/Office for Political Innovation. Their innovative research, which combinines surveys and interviews with planners and residents, presents critically a fundamental aspect of modern societies, i.e. how the power of media occupies other social spaces.

In the Monditalia section, three special mentions went to "Radical Pedagogies: ACTION-REACTION-INTERACTION", on the different impacts of Italian Architectural around the world, "Intermundia", an immersive experience echoing the tragedy of Lampedusa and migration, and "Italian Limes", on climate change and new technologies impact on territorial delimitation in the North of Italy and on intra-European borders.
