This mythological scene depicts a story from the Loves of Jove: the princess of Argo, Danae, imprisoned by her father Acrisius, who fears a prophecy stating that he will be dethroned by his own grandson, is impregnated by Jove, who reaches her by transforming himself into a golden rain. From their union, Perseus is born. The painting was only added to the Gallery in 1827 when it was purchased by Camillo Borghese.
